Poison Springs State ParkThe park was established to commemorate the Battle of Poison Spring during the Civil War and is part of the 17,000 plus acre Poison Springs Wildlife Management Area, which offers outstanding deer, turkey and small game hunting. The park itself, located off of the beaten path - yet easy to reach, has a nice large shaded picnic area, and like many of the amenities of this part of the country is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle. HistoryA famous civil-war battle, mentioned in the movie "Lincoln", took place here. The battle not only included as expected, white soldiers on both sides, but also involved Choctaw troops fighting on the southern side and the 1st Kansas Colored infrantry made of primarily ex-slaves fighting on the union side.

Wildlife / HuntingDeer are often found crossing the roads or along the side of the highway. During deer season, they can often be found
grazing in downtown Chidester at night. A large portion of public land is available and was set aside primarily for
hunters, and many deer camps also surround the area.
